City of Dubuque bid farewell to one of its most dedicated public servants, Chief of Police Jeremy Jensen. After an exemplary career in law enforcement spanning over 32 years, including 32 years proudly served with the Dubuque Police Department, Chief Jensen is marking the end of an incredible journey.

On behalf of the community and the entire team at Dubuque in Pursuit News, we extend our highest decorations, gratitude, and warmest congratulations to Chief Jensen as he prepares to embark on this next chapter of his life.

Chief Jensen first joined the Dubuque Police Department in March 1994. Over the course of more than three decades, he wore nearly every uniform the department has to offer. His steady ascent through the ranks saw him serve diligently in patrol, criminal investigations, tactical operations, traffic, internal affairs, and community policing.

By December 2017, his leadership capabilities led to his promotion as Assistant Chief of Police. He later stepped up as Interim Chief in late 2021 before officially taking the helm as Chief of Police in March 2022.

Throughout his tenure, Chief Jensen rejected the “us against them” mentality, choosing instead to pioneer a culture deeply rooted in community partnership, transparency, and emotional intelligence. Reflecting on his career, Chief Jensen recently noted that community engagement is “all I’ve known being with the Dubuque Police Department,” emphasizing that true policing is about being actively intertwined with the neighborhoods we protect.

Beyond bridging the gap between the public and law enforcement, Chief Jensen’s tenure will be remembered for structural progress. He championed critical initiatives surrounding officer mental health and wellness, ensuring that the men and women putting their lives on the line had the necessary peer and psychological support systems. Furthermore, his administration consistently prioritized advanced technology and intercultural competency training to better address complex urban challenges.

Even as his retirement nears, his ultimate focus has remained unyielding: public safety and helping victims find closure after traumatic experiences.

When he walks out the front doors of the department this August, Chief Jensen notes that his humble goal is to do so quietly, hoping “no one even notices.” However, a legacy of 32 years of steadfast protection, integrity, and proactive leadership cannot—and will not—go unnoticed by the citizens of Dubuque.
