Dubuque, IA – May 13, 2025

As summer brings warm weather and outdoor fun, the Dubuque Police Department (DPD) warns of a seasonal surge in motor vehicle burglaries. Data shows a significant increase in reported incidents during warmer months compared to colder ones, with thieves targeting unlocked cars and valuables left in plain sight.

The DPD also notes a national TikTok-driven trend targeting certain Kia and Hyundai models, with a few local reports mirroring the issue. This social media challenge has led to thefts, 14 crashes, and eight fatalities nationwide, prompting Hyundai and Kia to offer free theft-deterrent software updates. The update extends the alarm duration to one minute and requires the key in the ignition to start the vehicle. Hyundai is also providing anti-theft window stickers.

The DPD urges owners of affected Kia and Hyundai vehicles to contact Hyundai (800-633-5151) or Kia (800-333-4542) for the free update and to check with local law enforcement for one of the 26,000 steering wheel locks distributed to agencies in 12 states.

To combat burglaries, the DPD recommends locking vehicles, hiding valuables, and parking in well-lit areas.
