DUBUQUE, Iowa — Brendan Welsh was sworn in this morning as the Dubuque Police Department’s new Assistant Chief of Police.

Welsh has served with the department since 2004. He steps into the new role after most recently serving as a captain in the Patrol Division. Over the course of his career, he has held assignments in patrol, criminal investigations, community-oriented policing, crime prevention, and public information.

He has also served as a patrol shift commander and previously coordinated the department’s field training, awards and recognition, honor guard, and firearms programs. Additional responsibilities have included serving as a member and supervisor of the department’s tactical entry team.

A 2000 graduate of Wahlert High School, Welsh served in the United States Marine Corps before joining the Dubuque Police Department. He is a graduate of the Police Executive Research Forum’s Senior Management Institute for Police at Boston University. Welsh holds a bachelor’s degree in marketing and a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Dubuque. He has also served as an adjunct professor at the University of Dubuque, teaching courses related to law enforcement, criminal justice, and leadership and motivation.

The department congratulated Welsh on his promotion and new leadership role.
