DUBUQUE COUNTY, Iowa — An 81-year-old Cedar Rapids man died Monday morning after his vehicle crossed the center line and struck an oncoming truck head-on on Highway 52 near Double J Lane, according to an Iowa State Patrol report.

The crash occurred at 9:54 a.m. July 27. A 2022 Ford Escape driven by the 81-year-old was traveling northbound when it crossed the center line and collided with a southbound 2017 Ford F-250 driven by a 51-year-old Decorah man, the report states. The Escape’s driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

Three people in the F-250 — the 51-year-old driver, a 26-year-old from Ossian and a 22-year-old from Cresco — were taken by Bi-County Ambulance to MercyOne Dyersville Medical Center with injuries described as minor. All three were wearing seat belts; the report notes the belts helped save the lives of the 51- and 26-year-olds.

Both vehicles were towed from the scene by Tegeler’s. Authorities identified no third vehicle involved.

Iowa State Patrol Trooper Dake led the investigation, with assistance from additional state troopers, Dyersville Police, the Dubuque County Sheriff’s Office, Dyersville Fire, New Vienna Fire, Bi-County Ambulance, the Iowa Department of Transportation, the Dubuque County Medical Examiner, Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home, and Tegeler’s Wrecker and Crane.

Names of those involved were withheld in the official report. No further details on the cause of the center-line departure were immediately available
