DUBUQUE — Cheers and applause filled the air Monday evening as the City of Dubuque officially swore in Joe Messerich as the new Chief of Police, marking a significant leadership transition for the Dubuque Police Department. 

Messerich, a 25-year veteran of the department, steps into the role following the retirement of Chief Jeremy Jensen, who is set to depart in the coming weeks after more than 30 years of service, including four as chief. 

The swearing-in ceremony highlighted Messerich’s deep roots in the community and extensive experience. He has served in numerous capacities since joining the department in 2001, including roles in community-oriented policing, criminal investigations, patrol, professional standards, and as Assistant Chief since 2022. He holds a Master of Business Administration from the University of Dubuque and is a certified peace officer through the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy. 

City leaders praised the appointment, noting Messerich’s proven track record and commitment to community engagement. “Congratulations, Joe!” echoed through the chamber as council members and attendees celebrated the promotion. 

In recent interviews, Messerich expressed enthusiasm for his new responsibilities. “I was fortunate. I got to experience a lot of things in my career so far,” he said, highlighting his work across divisions and specialized training. He looks forward to strengthening partnerships and building relationships throughout the Dubuque community. 

Under Jensen’s leadership, the department achieved notable successes, including a nearly 25% drop in total crimes last year and improved community trust. Messerich is expected to build on this foundation of community-oriented policing.
