The Dubuque Dragon Boat Association (DDBA) will host the 38th Annual Dubuque Dragon Boat Races on September 11–13, 2026, at Miller Riverview Park (1851 Admiral Sheehy Drive) on the Mississippi River. The 2026 theme is “County Fair Fun!”—teams are encouraged to embrace nostalgic fair elements in their decorations, costumes, and spirit.
Key details:
• Location & Course: Mississippi River at Miller Riverview Park. Races are 250 yards on a two-lane course (inside/outside lanes) using Taiwan-style dragon boats. Finish is determined by the flag-catcher pulling the flag.
• Schedule structure: Teams typically race three times—Saturday morning time trials for seeding/division placement, Saturday afternoon bracket racing, and Sunday medal races (1st–3rd place).
• Crew composition (Taiwan style used in Dubuque): 18 paddlers + drummer + flag-catcher + sternsman. Mixed divisions require at least eight women paddlers in the boat. Registration often covers up to 25 team members.
• Divisions include Elite Mixed, Corporate Cup, Adventurers Cup, Junior, Breast Cancer Survivor, Scout teams, and Unified.
• Spectator experience: Free to watch. Shuttle service is provided. The park offers camping (reservations open June 1; contact the organizers), picnic areas, and a festive atmosphere with food, music, and community energy that matches the “County Fair” theme. Nearby lodging options include hotels close to the site.
• Practical notes: Wood paddles and PFDs provided (Coast Guard-approved, non-inflatable only); closed-toe or back-strap footwear required; local teams often help visiting crews with flag-catchers or advice.
