Dubuque, Iowa — The Dubuque Fire Department quickly extinguished a porch fire at a two-story residence early Sunday morning.
Crews were dispatched at 12:16 a.m. on July 5, 2026. Medic 1 arrived first at 12:18 a.m., finding all occupants safely outside with fire limited to the front porch. A total of 17 firefighters responded.
Firefighters used portable extinguishers and then a 1¾-inch hose line from Engine 3, knocking down the fire by approximately 12:20 a.m. The blaze was contained before it could spread into the home.
Damage was limited to a garbage container, recycling bin, porch carpeting, and portions of the front porch. Minor smoke entered the residence and was cleared with positive pressure ventilation. The home remained habitable.
The fire appears accidental. Investigators determined the homeowner had disposed of used consumer fireworks in the porch garbage container after July 4 celebrations. No injuries were reported.
The Dubuque Fire Department reminds residents that used fireworks can remain hot for some time. Soak them thoroughly with water before disposal in a non-combustible container away from structures.
