Hey neighbors and visitors — if you’re looking for a perfect way to soak up some Independence Day vibes, head over to the Mathias Ham Historic Site (aka the Ham House) right now! The annual Audrey Hammer 4th of July Ice Cream Social is happening today, Saturday, July 4, 2026, from about 10a.m. to 3 p.m. at 2241 Lincoln Avenue. Everyone’s invited — families, friends, history buffs, or anyone craving ice cream and good times.Â
This event has been a Dubuque tradition for decades, and it’s named after Audrey Hammer, a longtime volunteer and tour guide who loved teaching kids and serving the community. It’s the kind of laid-back gathering that feels like old-school small-town America: good food, games, music, and a big dose of local history.
What’s Going On Today?
There’s plenty to do, whether you’re there for an hour or the whole afternoon:
• Yummy Eats: Grab picnic-style food, cakes, and of course plenty of ice cream (thanks to sponsors like Prairie Farms). Everything’s available for purchase, so you can make a day of it.
• Games & Crafts for the Kids (and Kids at Heart): Victorian-era fun in the yard — think sack races, horseshoes, jacks, and other old-fashioned games. Crafts will be happening throughout the day too.
• Live Music & Radio Vibes: Catch The Americana Band playing live, plus Dick McGrane from SuperHits 106.1 broadcasting onsite. Great background for hanging out on the grounds.
• History Comes Alive: Free tours of the beautiful Mathias Ham House (fresh off some awesome restorations), the Humke one-room schoolhouse, a replica lead mine, and even Iowa’s oldest standing log cabin. You’ll see costumed interpreters, live demos, and booming cannon fire that really gets everyone excited.
Free-will donations are welcome, and every bit helps preserve this special spot — including matching grants for the house restoration. It’s a fun way to give back while having a blast.
Why the Ham House Rocks
The Mathias Ham House isn’t just any old building. Built in the 1850s by entrepreneur Mathias Ham (a guy who made his mark in lead mining, lumber, shipping, and more), it’s this stunning Italianate-style mansion overlooking the Mississippi area. The whole site packs in layers of early Iowa history — from pioneer life to Victorian elegance. Touring it feels like stepping into a time machine, especially with the interpreters sharing stories.
Events like this ice cream social make history feel real and approachable. Instead of just reading about the past, you get to experience it — maybe watch laundry done the old way, hear cannon fire, or imagine what life was like back then. It’s perfect for families wanting something more meaningful than just fireworks, though it pairs great with the bigger celebrations around town.
Come On Out — Seriously, Everyone’s Welcome!
Whether you’re a lifelong Dubuque resident, visiting for the weekend, or just love a good community party, this is the spot today. Bring the kids, bring grandma, bring a blanket to sit on the grass. Parking is easy (accessible spots off Shiras Avenue), and the vibe is super welcoming.
In a world full of screens and busy schedules, it’s nice to slow down, enjoy some ice cream, and connect with neighbors while supporting local history. The Ham House crew does a fantastic job making it fun for all ages.
