DUBUQUE, Iowa — A 39-year-old Dubuque man faces multiple charges, including a felony domestic abuse assault, after authorities responded to an incident Tuesday evening at a residence on Washington Street.

Zachary Alan Brenner was arrested around 6:18 p.m. on June 30, 2026, at 2829 Washington Street on the following charges:

•  Domestic Abuse Assault Impeding Air/Blood Flow Causing Bodily Injury (Class D Felony)

•  Domestic Abuse Assault With Injury – Simple Assault (Misdemeanor)

•  Child Endangerment (Misdemeanor)

Brenner, identified as a white male, was booked into custody with no bond set, according to the report from arresting officer J.D. Waddick.

Details of the Incident

Law enforcement responded to the address following reports that led to Brenner’s arrest on the domestic-related charges. The presence of a child endangerment count indicates that authorities believe a minor was placed at risk during the alleged incident. Specific details about the events, any injuries sustained by the victim, or the condition of the child have not been publicly released as the investigation continues.

Domestic abuse assaults involving strangulation or impeding breathing (impeding air/blood flow) are taken especially seriously under Iowa law due to the heightened risk of serious injury or fatality. Such offenses often carry enhanced penalties.

Legal Process

Brenner is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. He will appear in Iowa District Court for Dubuque County, where a judge will review the charges, potential conditions of release (including possible no-contact orders), and next steps.

Community Resources

Domestic violence and child endangerment remain significant community concerns. Local resources such as the Dubuque Y Crisis Services Program (DYCS) offer 24-hour support, emergency shelter, and advocacy for survivors of intimate partner violence and their children. Additional support is available through organizations like Riverview Center for survivors of violence.
