DUBUQUE, Iowa — In the early morning hours of Thursday, June 18, 2026, the Dubuque Fire Department (DUFD) was dispatched to a reported suicidal subject on the Dubuque–Wisconsin Bridge (also known as the Iowa-Wisconsin Bridge or U.S. 61/151 crossing).

Dispatch records show DUFD units handled “FIRE RIVER RESCUE” calls originating near the 400 block of E. 3rd Street in Dubuque’s riverfront area. The primary response (incident 26049986) spanned from approximately 11:52 PM on June 17 to 1:23 AM on June 18, with a brief follow-up call (26050002) around 1:59–2:00 AM.

Multi-Agency Coordination

Given the bridge’s position spanning the Mississippi River into Grant County, Wisconsin, the response involved standard cross-jurisdictional coordination. The Grant County Sheriff’s Office likely assisted with traffic control, scene security on the Wisconsin approach, and support for any water or ground operations. Dubuque Fire maintains specialized river rescue capabilities, often working alongside local police and out-of-state partners in these high-stakes Mississippi River incidents.

The incident occurred amid heightened activity on the Iowa-Wisconsin Bridge due to ongoing multi-phase repairs on the nearby Julien Dubuque Bridge (U.S. 20). Those closures, which began June 15, 2026, and are expected to continue into mid-September, have rerouted significant traffic across the northern crossing, with additional impacts on Wisconsin highways 11/35.

Limited Public Details Available

As is typical for sensitive mental health emergencies, especially very recent ones, public details remain limited. No official statements on the outcome (e.g., successful rescue and transport, or other resolution), subject identification, or further timelines have been released by Dubuque authorities, Grant County, or local media as of the latest checks. Authorities prioritize privacy and family considerations in such cases.

Dubuque Fire and partner agencies train extensively for these complex river rescues, which can involve boats, technical gear, crisis negotiation, and coordination across state lines in the tri-state area (Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois).

Bridge-related mental health crises are a regional and national challenge. Incidents on Mississippi River crossings and similar structures underscore the critical role of rapid first responder intervention — and the value of prevention efforts like barriers or netting where feasible. Dubuque and surrounding communities continue to emphasize mental health awareness alongside emergency preparedness.
