
Galena, IL – A 17-year-old boy from Rochester, Illinois, died after losing consciousness while swimming in the indoor pool at Chestnut Mountain Resort on Friday, February 13, 2026.
According to the Jo Daviess County Sheriff’s Office, dispatch received a 911 call at 9:08 p.m. reporting a possible drowning at the resort (8700 W. Chestnut Mountain Rd., rural Galena). Deputies and a Galena police officer responded and learned the teen —had appeared to lose consciousness in the water.
Another juvenile pulled him from the pool before first responders arrived. Elizabeth EMS began advanced life-saving measures, supported by REACT One AirCare, but Zucco was pronounced dead at the scene. His body was transported to a regional medical facility by Elizabeth EMS.
Assisting agencies included Hanover Fire Department, Chestnut Mountain Ski Patrol, and the Jo Daviess County Coroner. The sheriff’s office continues to investigate; no further details have been released.
The incident highlights the rapid, often silent nature of drowning—even in supervised resort pools—and the critical role of immediate bystander action. No foul play is suspected. The investigation remains ongoing.
