Galena, IL – The Jo Daviess County Sheriff’s Office has identified the victim of a fatal drowning at Chestnut Mountain Resort as 17-year-old Jack Zucco of Rochester, Illinois.
On February 13, 2026, at 9:08 p.m., deputies responded to a 911 call reporting a possible drowning at the resort’s indoor pool (8700 W. Chestnut Mountain Rd., rural Galena). Zucco, a junior at Rochester High School, had lost consciousness while swimming. Another juvenile pulled him from the water before first responders arrived.
Elizabeth EMS performed advanced life-saving measures, assisted by REACT One AirCare, but Zucco was pronounced dead at the scene. His body was transported to a regional medical facility.
Assisting agencies included Hanover Fire Department, Chestnut Mountain Ski Patrol, and the Jo Daviess County Coroner. The investigation remains active with no additional details released; foul play is not suspected.
Zucco was an honor-roll student, wrestler, baseball player, and Boy Scout. A community prayer service was held February 16 at Rocket Booster Stadium in Rochester, and a GoFundMe supports his family.
