Unseasonably warm, breezy southerly winds and dry antecedent conditions will elevate fire danger today, particularly in areas along and south of Interstate 80.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms are anticipated this evening, with a marginal risk of severe weather, level 1 of 5, for Severe Weather. The primary threats will be isolated large hail and frequent lightning.

Throughout the remainder of the week, Wednesday through Monday, additional showers and thunderstorms are expected, particularly along the cold front that will sweep through the area this afternoon and evening. Some of these storms may be strong to severe, with all hazards possible. The Storm Prediction Center has highlighted much of our area in a marginal risk of severe weather, level 1 of 5, and a slight risk of severe weather, level 2 of 5, for parts of western Illinois.

Cold air will rapidly move in behind the cold front on Wednesday evening and night, transitioning from rain to snow. Most of the area should receive less than an inch of snow, with upwards to two inches in our far northwest. Strong winds accompanying the snow will result in periods of reduced visibility.

Spotter activation will not be required today, but may be necessary for any hail reports late tonight.

GENERAL STORM MOTION OF THE DAY: Northeast at 45 mph this evening.
