Brown’s journey with the department began on January 31, 1982, when he joined at the age of 26. His dedication and skill saw him rise steadily through the ranks. In 1986, he became a Fire Equipment Operator, followed by a promotion to Lieutenant in 1987. By 1993, he had earned the rank of Captain, and in 1996, he took the helm as Fire Chief—a role he held until his retirement in 2014.

“Chief Brown will be deeply missed,” the Dubuque Fire Department said in a statement. “His legacy will forever remain a part of our community and the fire service.” Colleagues recall him as a tough yet compassionate leader who prioritized the safety of both his firefighters and the people of Dubuque.
