Orlandis Fred Murriel, a 35-year-old resident of Dubuque, was sentenced in federal court on Monday to fifteen years and eight months behind bars, followed by six years of supervised release. Murriel pleaded guilty to the charge of possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance near a protected location.

According to a press release issued by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Iowa, Murriel admitted that between June and November of 2022, he sold over 2,400 grams of crack cocaine in his hometown. The federal prosecutors also revealed that many of the transactions took place within one thousand feet of three Dubuque playgrounds, namely Orange Park, Madison Park, and Jackson Park.

This case was investigated by the Dubuque Drug Task Force and the Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement
