On Saturday, August 19, 2023, at 7:13 PM, a tenant on the first floor of a multi-family residence at 1691 Main Street made an emergency call to 911 to report a fire inside the building. The tenant stated that the smoke detectors were going off, indicating the severity of the situation. The emergency services immediately responded to the distress call, dispatching firefighters to the scene at 7:14 PM. The initial responding vehicles included Command 528, Engine 501, Ladder 511, Medic 551, Engine 503, Engine 506, and Truck 512. These vehicles were equipped with the necessary equipment and personnel to combat the fire effectively.
A total of 17 firefighters swiftly arrived at the location, ready to tackle the blaze. Their prompt response and efficient coordination were crucial in ensuring the safety of the residents and containing the fire. The firefighters quickly assessed the situation upon arrival and began executing their well-trained procedures to combat the fire and minimize any potential damage.
The first unit, Command 528, arrived on scene within 2 minutes of dispatch, established command, conducted a size up with nothing showing and directed the initial companies to investigate. Initial fire crews entered the structure and confirmed a grease fire which was extinguished by the occupant. Crews also reported moderate smoke conditions inside the building. Firefighters located two residents with injuries which required transport to the hospital. The incident commander upgraded the alarm which added two additional ambulances to the scene to assist. Crews worked to clear the building of smoke and confirmed no further extension within the building. The fire was determined to be accidental in nature, cooking related. The building was determined to be habitable and all occupants were able to return to their units.
The Dubuque Fire Department was assisted on scene by the Dubuque Police Department. There were no injuries to responders reported.
