On July 11, 2023, at 5:20 P.M., a Grant County Sheriff’s Deputy was on patrol on Hwy 61 in Liberty Township. In the posted 55mph zone, the deputy observed a commercial motor vehicle driving 91mph. A traffic stop was conducted on the vehicle, which towed a tandem axle trailer with a skid steer. The deputy observed that the skid steer had only one chain securing it to the trailer. In addition, the deputy noticed that the trailer’s lighting system did not work.
Rodrigo Lopez, 18, of Abbotsford, WI, was driving a commercial motor vehicle owned by Area Wide Concrete and Excavating LLC of Withee, WI. It was discovered that Mr. Lopez did not have a driver’s license at all. After being arrested for operating a commercial motor vehicle without a CDL, Mr. Lopez was taken to the Grant County Jail. Speeding was also charged against him.
The Sheriff’s Office contacted Area Wide Concrete and Excavating LLC and informed them of the incident. A crew from Fennimore Collision Specialists arrived on scene to secure the skid steer for transportation to the Sheriff’s Office.
A supervisor with Area Wide Concrete and Excavating LLC arrived at the Sheriff’s Office and posted bond for Mr. Lopez. There was a release of the commercial motor vehicle.
Area Wide Concrete and Excavating LLC was cited for Failure to Display Registration, Operating without Stop Lights, and Improper Directional Lighting.
Wisconsin State Patrol is conducting an ongoing investigation. This matter will be referred to the Grant County District Attorney’s Office.
Persons arrested and/or referred for charges by the Grant County Sheriff’s Office are presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court of law. An arrest only indicates probable cause for formal charges. The names of victims and witnesses to a crime have been withheld per Wisconsin Statute §950.04.
