A Deputy doing checks found 47-year-old Virgil Polkinghorn Friday evening in his cell, unresponsive. The deputies, a jail nurse, performed CPR and used an AED to resuscitate him.
The Dubuque Fire Department transported Polkinghorn to Mercy One Medical Center, Emergency Trauma Center, where they pronounced him Dead
Polkinghorn was in jailed for an assault.
The incident remains under investigation.
