DES MOINES, Iowa — Three people were injured in a shooting Thursday morning, November 5, 2026, at the Main Post Office in Des Moines, and a suspect has been detained, according to the Des Moines Police Department.

The shooting happened shortly after 9 a.m. at the United States Postal Service office at 1165 Second Ave. Police said the report placed the shooter on the second floor of the building.

Two of the injured people were found at the post office, and a third person got themselves to a nearby hospital for treatment. Police said all three injuries appear to be non-life-threatening.

The first officer reached the scene in about three and a half minutes, Des Moines Police Sgt. Paul Parizek told reporters at the scene. Police said the scene was secure, and a multi-agency response was underway, with officers from the Des Moines Police Department, Pleasant Hill Police Department, Polk County Sheriff’s Office and Iowa State Patrol on scene, along with fire department vehicles and ambulances.

Second Avenue was closed in both directions, and police asked the public to avoid the area around Second and University avenues while the investigation continues. The post office sits directly across the street from MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center.

Police have not released the suspect’s name, any charges, or a possible motive. No other details had been released as of Thursday morning, and the investigation is ongoing.
