GALENA, Ill. — A 22-year-old Iowa man was injured and cited after his vehicle overturned near Galena on Monday evening, November 2, 2026, according to a media release from the Jo Daviess County Sheriff’s Office.

The crash happened at about 6:30 p.m. at the intersection of South Blackjack Road and West Sandhill Road in rural Galena. The sheriff’s dispatch center received a 911 call from an iPhone crash detection notification plotting at the intersection, and deputies from the Jo Daviess County Sheriff’s Office and officers from the Galena Police Department responded.

Deputies found a single vehicle overturned about 15 yards off the roadway in a ditch to the north. According to the sheriff’s office, the driver, Marco B. Francois, 22, of Riverdale, Iowa, was traveling north on South Blackjack Road and failed to reduce his speed while negotiating a right-hand curve, causing his vehicle to enter the oncoming lane and leave the roadway to the north. After leaving the roadway, the vehicle struck a tree with the left side door, causing it to overturn.

Francois was ejected about ten yards from the vehicle through the open sunroof. Galena EMS transported him by ambulance to MercyOne Hospital in Dubuque, Iowa, where he received treatment for his injuries. The release did not state the extent of his injuries.

Francois was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and improper lane usage. He is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court. The crash remains under investigation.

The Galena Fire Department also assisted at the scene.
