WATERLOO, Iowa — The Dubuque Fighting Saints tied the game in the final minute of regulation on October 31, 2026, but fell 3-2 in overtime to the Waterloo Black Hawks at Young Arena.
Waterloo never trailed in the Halloween afternoon matchup. The Black Hawks opened the scoring late in the first period, when Russell scored on the power play at 17:42, assisted by Cody Sokol and Jordan Geike, for a 1-0 lead.
Dubuque answered in the second period. During a delayed penalty situation, Covelluzzi scored at 11:48, with assists from Ekman and Martin, tying the game at 1-1.
Waterloo regained the lead early in the third period. At 3:37, Geike found Dylan Nolan speeding up the left wing, and Nolan scored his team-leading ninth goal of the season to make it 2-1.
The Saints refused to go quietly. With their goaltender pulled and time running out, Olle Därth scored on the power play at 19:30 of the third period, assisted by Brierley and Lind, tying the game 2-2 with 29.6 seconds remaining in regulation.
Overtime did not last long. Waterloo defenseman Caleb Deanovich took control in his own zone after a Dubuque player fell down, moved up the ice and, after the puck came back to him, scored early in the extra period to give the Black Hawks the 3-2 win. The goal was Deanovich’s second of the season, assisted by Sokol.
In goal, Dubuque’s Banini stopped 32 of 35 shots, while Waterloo’s Charvat stopped 18 of 20.
The win improved Waterloo to 5-0-0 at Young Arena this season and closed out a 6-1-1 October, described by the club as its most successful October in a decade. It was also Waterloo’s second consecutive overtime win on Halloween, after a 4-3 overtime win over Green Bay exactly one year earlier.
The teams do not have long to wait for a rematch. Dubuque hosts Waterloo on November 1, 2026, at 5:05 p.m. at ImOn Arena in Dubuque, closing out the Halloween home-and-home series.
