JAMESTOWN TOWNSHIP, Wis. — A Benton man was seriously injured and later arrested following a single-vehicle motorcycle crash Friday night on Sandy Hook Road in Grant County.

According to the Grant County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded at 9:41 p.m. Aug. 28 to a reported motorcycle accident with injuries near the intersection of Sandy Hook Road and Rock Cut Road.

Investigators determined that Dustin Schemehorn, 36, of Benton, was traveling east on Sandy Hook Road at a high rate of speed when he lost control of his motorcycle and crashed. Schemehorn was not wearing protective gear and sustained serious injuries. He was flown from the scene by helicopter to UW-Madison for further treatment.

Sheriff’s officials said speed and possible impairment are believed to have been factors in the crash.

Schemehorn was placed under arrest and cited for operating while intoxicated (third offense) and operating without a valid motorcycle endorsement. The incident remains under investigation.

Assisting agencies included Jamestown First Responders, the Jamestown Fire Department, Dickeyville EMS, Medflight, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, and Donnie’s Tire and Auto.

Persons arrested or referred for charges by the Grant County Sheriff’s Office are presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court of law. An arrest only indicates probable cause exists to bring formal charges. The names of victims and witnesses to a crime have been withheld per Wisconsin Statute §950.04.
