

MUSCATINE, Iowa — Authorities continue to search for a 59-year-old Des Moines man accused of shooting a Muscatine police officer during a foot chase Friday evening, with the suspect remaining at large as of Sunday.
Mark Lee Jackson is considered armed and dangerous and has active warrants for parole violation (through Iowa State Corrections) and second-degree theft (through the Muscatine Police Department). Police are asking the public for help locating him and warn against approaching or contacting him.
According to the Muscatine Police Department, the incident began around 5:12 p.m. Friday when a Muscatine County Sheriff’s Office deputy attempted to stop a vehicle driven recklessly near Benham Avenue and Nebraska Street. The driver failed to stop and continued traveling erratically at high speeds through residential neighborhoods before crashing. Jackson then fled on foot.
Around 5:27 p.m., officers spotted him running in the 1200 block of Grandview Avenue. During the subsequent foot pursuit, Jackson fired at pursuing officers and struck a Muscatine police officer. The officer was transported by the Muscatine Fire Department and was reported in stable condition.
Jackson is described as approximately 5 feet 10 inches tall, weighing 145 pounds, with blue eyes and thinning gray hair. Photos of him have been released by police.
In an update issued Saturday afternoon (Aug. 15), the department confirmed that after an extensive search, Jackson remained at large and reiterated the call for public assistance. Multiple agencies assisted in the response and search, including the Iowa State Patrol, Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation, and nearby law enforcement agencies.
As of Sunday morning (Aug. 16), Jackson was still not in custody. Crime Stoppers of the Quad Cities is offering a $2,500 reward for information leading to his arrest. Police planned a press conference for 4 p.m. Sunday to provide further updates.
