The Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa (RAGBRAI) returns in 2026 for its 53rd edition, and this year’s route is historic: the shortest in the event’s history at approximately 391.4 miles total, yet still demanding with over 16,000 feet of elevation gain. The ride begins with an expo on July 18 in Onawa and concludes on July 25 in Dubuque, where riders will celebrate by dipping their tires in the Mississippi River.

Dubuque, known as Iowa’s oldest city and a place “where Iowa started,” is embracing its role as the grand finale. This marks a significant homecoming for the event, offering riders scenic views, community hospitality, and a memorable endpoint after a week of pedaling through small-town Iowa charm, including a notable stop at the Field of Dreams in Dyersville on the final day.

The Route Through Dubuque on Day 7 (July 25)

The final leg from Dyersville to Dubuque is one of the shortest daily segments at around 33.7–34.1 miles with roughly 1,700–1,800 feet of climb. Riders depart Dyersville, enjoy a breakfast stop at the iconic Field of Dreams movie site, then pass through Farley, Epworth, and Centralia before reaching the Mississippi River.

In Dubuque, the official tire-dip celebration takes place at A.Y. McDonald Park. Organizers expect the first riders to arrive as early as 6 a.m., with the bulk of the pack rolling through between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. The route will officially close in the city at 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 25.

Key impacts for locals and visitors:

•  Road closures and heavy traffic are anticipated, particularly on US 151/61 North and South, 16th Street near the former Dubuque Pack site, Kerper Boulevard, and areas around A.Y. McDonald Park.

•  Complimentary shuttles and designated parking (first-come, first-served lots) will help manage logistics for the dip site. Vehicles will not have direct access close to the park—shuttles are recommended.

Events and Activities in Dubuque

Dubuque is planning festivities across two key weekends to maximize the experience:

•  Camping Weekend (July 17–18): Early arrivals and support crews can camp at McAleece Park (tent camping on a baseball field, registration required). Shuttles connect to downtown, the Port of Dubuque, Millwork District, and showers at Sutton Pool. Long-term parking is available at the grass lot on 799 East 16th Street.

•  Tire Dip Weekend (July 25): The main celebration at A.Y. McDonald Park includes welcomes, information booths, vendor opportunities, and community cheer. Additional activities may feature local music, food, and sights along the riverfront. Post-ride showers, shuttles, and cleanup efforts are coordinated.

The city is also promoting lodging, local vendors, merchandise (t-shirts and posters), and sponsorships to showcase Dubuque’s vibrant downtown, river views, and hospitality. An estimated 25,000 people are expected to participate in or attend the Dubuque finale.

How to Volunteer in Dubuque

Volunteering is a fantastic way for locals, families, and groups to get involved, meet riders from across the U.S. and world, and help make the event run smoothly. Roles range from information booths and welcome teams to dip-site assistance, parking support, showers, cleanup, and more. Many shifts offer a free RAGBRAI t-shirt, and training sessions are provided.

How to sign up:

•  Visit dubuqueragbrai.com or volunteerdbq.com for current opportunities and registration.

•  Examples include: Sister City International Park Information Booth, Bergfeld Pond Pitstop, long-term parking help, dip-site welcome team, shower support, and post-event cleanup.

•  Volunteers of all ages (under 18 with adult supervision) are welcome. Shifts cover setup, event day, and tear-down.

Community information meetings were held in June 2026 (in-person at Q Casino & Resort and virtual via Zoom) to discuss plans, road impacts, volunteering, and more. Check the official sites for updates, as details continue to evolve.
