June 17, 2026 — U.S. Air Force Maj. Brad Hovey, an Iowa native and test pilot with the 419th Flight Test Squadron, was one of eight people killed when a B-52 Stratofortress crashed during a test flight near Edwards Air Force Base in California on Monday, June 15, 2026.

Hovey was serving as a pilot aboard the multi-crew bomber, which was conducting a radar modernization test. All eight personnel on board—military members, civilians, and contractors—died in the crash. No ground casualties were reported.

Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds issued a statement: “Along with every Iowan, Kevin and I mourn the loss of Maj. Brad Hovey and we offer our sincere condolences and prayers for his family. Again, we are reminded of the incredible sacrifice demanded of every American who chooses to serve our country. As we honor Maj. Hovey’s life and service, let us never forget the cost of our freedom.”

The Air Force has launched a full investigation into the cause. Edwards AFB, a key flight test center, has a history of both breakthroughs and tragic losses in high-risk developmental missions.

Maj. Hovey, who grew up in Iowa and graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy, brought extensive experience to the 419th Squadron. His death highlights the dangers faced by test crews advancing U.S. strategic capabilities, including the long-serving B-52 fleet.

The aviation community and Iowans mourn the loss. A memorial is expected in the coming weeks. The Air Force has requested privacy for the families.
