DUBUQUE, IA — The Dubuque Police Department is issuing a community-wide alert following a noticeable uptick in catalytic converter thefts within the area. Authorities are specifically warning owners of larger vehicles—including RVs, buses, and box trucks—to exercise heightened caution as these machines become the primary targets for thieves.

Why Larger Vehicles Are at Risk

According to investigators, the nature of these vehicles makes them particularly vulnerable for several reasons:

Extended Storage: Large vehicles are often parked for long durations in lots or driveways, providing thieves with a predictable window of opportunity.

Ease of Access: The increased ground clearance on many buses and trucks allows thieves to easily slide underneath the vehicle to reach the exhaust system.

High Value: Catalytic converters on larger vehicles are often bigger and can contain a higher concentration of the precious metals that thieves target for resale on the illicit market.

Proactive Steps to Protect Your Property

To combat this trend, the Dubuque Police Department is urging both residents and business owners to take immediate, proactive measures to secure their property. Recommendations include:

Regular Inspections: Frequently check on stored vehicles and heavy equipment to ensure they remain undisturbed.

Strategic Parking: Whenever possible, park vehicles in well-lit, highly visible areas rather than isolated or dark corners of a lot.

Enhanced Surveillance: Install security cameras or motion-activated lighting near parking areas to deter criminal activity and capture evidence.

Secure Storage: Whenever possible, move vehicles into locked garages or fenced, gated facilities with restricted access.

Reporting Suspicious Activity

Community cooperation is essential in preventing these crimes. If you notice any suspicious individuals or activity near parked vehicles—especially during overnight hours—you are encouraged to report it immediately.

 Emergencies: Dial 911

Non-Emergency Concerns: Contact the Dubuque Police Department at 563-589-4415

“Staying proactive and aware can help prevent these types of thefts,” the Department stated in their release. By taking simple steps to harden these targets, owners can play a vital role in curbing this criminal activity and protecting their assets.
