Asbury, Iowa — Motorists should prepare for a temporary full closure of Asbury Road between Radford Road and Water View Lane starting Tuesday evening, June 9, 2026.

The road will be closed from 7:00 PM Tuesday, June 9, until 11:00 AM Wednesday, June 10, for approximately 1,049 feet as part of sewer utility work connected to the ongoing Asbury Road at Hales Mill Road Roundabout Project. Eastbound and westbound traffic is expected to reopen following the completion of this short closure.

Context of the Larger Project

This overnight closure is a targeted interruption within the broader $1.138 million roundabout construction project awarded to Valentine Construction Company. The main project, which began on June 1, 2026, involves removing existing pavement and building a modern roundabout at the intersection of Asbury Road and Hales Mill Road. It also includes curb and gutter improvements, minor sidewalk work, utility upgrades, turf and driveway reconstruction, grading, and landscaping.

The roundabout aims to improve safety and traffic flow at a busy intersection. While Hales Mill Road at the intersection remains closed for the duration of the overall project, Asbury Road itself has generally stayed open to east-west traffic, with temporary traffic controls and lane shifts in place. This specific sewer tie-in requires a full, short-term shutdown of the affected segment.

Impacts on Drivers and Residents

•  Travel Disruptions: Drivers should expect detours and plan alternate routes during the closure window, which spans late evening through morning hours. This timing minimizes daytime impacts but could affect overnight commuters, shift workers, and early morning travelers.

•  Local Access: Residents and businesses in the immediate area may experience temporary inconvenience. Emergency services are typically coordinated with contractors for priority access during such closures.

•  Safety Reminder: Construction crews, equipment, and materials will be active on site. The City urges caution, adherence to all signage, and avoidance of bypassing detours via private driveways or parking lots, which is prohibited and subject to fines under city ordinance.

The project has already involved periodic changes to traffic patterns, utility markings, and surveyor stakes. Short, unplanned water service interruptions for nearby properties remain possible throughout construction, with quick repairs promised.

Broader Implications and Benefits

Roundabouts like this one generally reduce severe crashes compared to traditional intersections by lowering speeds and eliminating certain conflict points. For Asbury, this project supports long-term infrastructure goals, including better connectivity and development in the area (noted in prior city planning efforts like the Asbury Road Corridor Study).

However, construction phases inevitably bring challenges: noise, dust, equipment presence, and evolving traffic patterns over the expected 3- to 5-month timeline. The City has emphasized community patience as Valentine Construction, the City of Asbury, and engineering partners (MSA) collaborate toward completion.
