DUBUQUE, Iowa — May 31, 2026, 9:45 a.m. — Dubuque firefighters brought a large blaze at the Dubuque Metropolitan Area Landfill under control Sunday morning, officials said.

The Dubuque County 911 Emergency Communications Center was notified of the fire at 7:21 a.m. at 101 Airborne Road. First responders from the Dubuque Fire Department arrived on scene at 7:31 a.m. with seven units.

Due to the size of the fire and water supply needs, mutual aid was requested from the Asbury and Peosta fire departments. Landfill staff also assisted with the response.

Dubuque Fire Division Chief Josh Knepper and Fire Chief Amy Scheller are coordinating the incident response. By 9 a.m., crews had the fire under control and were working to extinguish small hot spots.

Officials say there is no current threat to the community and no injuries have been reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Airborne Road remained open, though residents may notice smoke in the area as crews continue mop-up operations. The Dubuque Fire Department advised that updates will be provided if conditions change.
