
MOUNT HOPE, Wis. — A 21-year-old Mount Hope man was arrested Friday evening after allegedly fleeing from a Grant County sheriff’s deputy during a high-speed traffic stop on Highway 18, authorities said.
According to the Grant County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred at approximately 7:46 p.m. on May 16, 2026, in the Town of Mount Hope. A deputy attempted to initiate a traffic stop on a motorcycle traveling at 115 miles per hour in a 55 mph zone. The operator disregarded the deputy’s signals and fled, leading to a short pursuit.
The motorcycle operator was later located at a residence in Mount Hope and taken into custody. He was identified as Gabriel Groom, 21, of Mount Hope.
Groom was arrested and booked into the Grant County Jail on the charge of Operator Fleeing and Eluding Law Enforcement. He was also cited for reckless driving and for operating a vehicle 45 or more miles per hour over the posted speed limit.
No injuries were reported in connection with the incident.
Persons arrested or referred for charges by the Grant County Sheriff’s Office are presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court of law. An arrest only indicates that probable cause exists to bring formal charges.
The names of any victims or witnesses have been withheld in accordance with Wisconsin Statute §950.04.
