DUBUQUE, Iowa — On May 1, 2026, a Dubuque County jury convicted 18-year-old Ahamad R. Atkins Jr. on all charges, including attempted murder, following closing arguments. Sentencing is scheduled for July.
The charges stem from an October 24 shooting in an alley west of the 1700 block of Jackson Street. Atkins, then 17, met 18-year-old former friend Kareem Sehwail after online arguments to settle their differences physically. Others present included Sehwail’s friend and Atkins’ brother.
Surveillance video captured a fight during which Atkins drew a 9mm handgun and fired once at Sehwail. The bullet missed Sehwail but struck an occupied car with three juveniles inside before hitting a residential garage. No one was injured. Atkins and his brother fled to East Dubuque, Illinois, where they were apprehended.
Prosecutors presented surveillance and traffic camera footage, damage photos, a shell casing, and a recorded call in which Atkins told his mother from a police vehicle that he had shot at Sehwail. Instagram messages showed the pair arranged the meeting.
The prosecution argued the bullet’s path demonstrated intent to kill. The defense acknowledged the shooting but said Atkins lacked intent to murder, describing the event as a tragic falling out between former friends and emphasizing his fear and emotional state. Atkins testified about his mindset at the time.
The case was tried in adult court. Convictions also include going armed with intent, reckless use of a firearm causing property damage, and a minor-in-possession charge.
This case highlights the dangers of youth conflicts escalating with firearms. .
