DES MOINES, IA — Dust off your helmets and start stretching those hamstrings. The route for RAGBRAI LIII (53) is officially locked in, and for 2026, the Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa is going small, hilly, and historic.
Scheduled for July 18–25, 2026, this year’s ride is officially the shortest in the event’s storied history, covering 391.4 miles. But don’t let the lower mileage fool you—it’s also ranked as the tenth-hilliest route ever, featuring a total climb of 16,027 feet.
The 2026 Route: From the River to the Hills
The trek begins on the western edge of the state in Onawa and concludes with a dip in the Mississippi at Dubuque. Along the way, riders will experience the quintessential hospitality of Iowa’s small towns.
The Overnight Stops:
• Day 0: Onawa (Starting Town)
• Day 1: Harlan
• Day 2: Guthrie Center
• Day 3: Boone
• Day 4: Marshalltown
• Day 5: Independence
• Day 6: Dyersville
• Day 7: Dubuque (Ending Town)

High-Energy Highlights
Each year, RAGBRAI is more than just a bike ride; it’s a moving festival.
• The “Field of Dreams” Factor: Stopping in Dyersville on Day 6 offers riders a chance to visit one of the state’s most iconic landmarks before the final push to the river.
• Boone’s Big Night: Entertainment is already heating up, with the legendary rock tribute band Hairball confirmed to perform during the overnight stay in Boone.
• The Century Day (Almost): While the route is short overall, Day 5 from Marshalltown to Independence will test endurance as the longest leg of the journey, stretching 86.2 miles.
Economic Impact and Community Spirit
For the eight overnight towns and dozens of “pass-through” communities, RAGBRAI 2026 represents a massive economic opportunity. Local churches, schools, and fire departments are already beginning to coordinate the famous pie stands and spaghetti dinners that fuel the nearly 20,000 riders and support crews.
“This route highlights the heart of small-town Iowa,” said RAGBRAI officials during the route announcement. “We’re leaning into the grit of the hills and the beauty of our local communities.”
Registration and Preparation
If you’re planning to ride, the time to start training is now.
• Registration: Open now at RAGBRAI.com. Prices typically increase as the event draws closer, so early birds get the best deal.
• Training: Experts recommend logging at least 500 to 1,000 miles before July to handle the 16,000+ feet of elevation gain.
