DUBUQUE COUNTY, Iowa — The Dubuque County Sheriff’s Office has identified the driver who died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound following a slow-speed vehicle pursuit on Saturday, April 18, 2026, as 45-year-old Scott M. Auderer of Dubuque.

Deputies attempted a traffic stop around 1:55 p.m. for traffic violations and an outstanding arrest warrant. Auderer refused to pull over, leading to a low-speed chase through northern Dubuque County, including areas near Holy Cross.

Deputies deployed stop sticks near Tollgate Road and Ridge Road, successfully stopping the vehicle. When officers approached, they found Auderer with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Deputies and Holy Cross EMS provided immediate aid, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. No other injuries were reported.

The Sheriff’s Office released Auderer’s name on Monday, April 20, after notifying his family. The investigation remains ongoing, with possible assistance from external agencies such as the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation. Autopsy and toxicology results are pending.
