The transition from middle school to high school marks one of the most exciting and important milestones in a young person’s educational journey. To help ease this shift and showcase all that awaits, Dubuque Senior High School and Hempstead High School are hosting their 2026 High School 8th-Grade Open Houses on Monday, April 13, 2026.

Each open house kicks off with a short program at 6:30 p.m. in the school’s gymnasium, followed by opportunities to explore the facilities, meet staff and students, and learn more about academic, athletic, and extracurricular offerings. The events are designed to run until approximately 8:00 p.m., giving families ample time to experience what high school life has in store.

Why Attend the Open House?

High school represents a significant step up — new environments, greater academic rigor, expanded course choices, increased independence, and a wider array of opportunities for personal growth. Attending the open house allows 8th graders and their families to:

•  Visualize daily life — Walk through hallways, classrooms, labs, performing arts spaces, athletic facilities, and common areas.

•  Learn about academics — Discover advanced placement (AP) courses, career and technical education (CTE) pathways, dual enrollment options with local colleges, and specialized programs that align with future college or career goals.

•  Explore extracurriculars — Meet coaches and advisors for sports, clubs, music ensembles, theater, robotics, student government, and more. Both schools boast strong traditions in athletics, arts, and student leadership.

•  Address the transition — Hear directly from administrators, counselors, and current high school students about academic expectations, social dynamics, support services (such as counseling and special education), and tips for success.

•  Ask questions — Discuss topics like scheduling, transportation, lunch options, technology requirements, dress code, and policies in a welcoming setting.

This event is especially valuable for families navigating the choice between the district’s two comprehensive high schools. While both offer robust programs, each has its own unique culture, strengths, and community feel:

•  Dubuque Senior High School (often referred to as “Senior”) has a long-standing history and strong traditions, frequently highlighted in district announcements for events like speech competitions, athletics, and community engagement.

•  Hempstead High School brings its own vibrant energy, with active student life, arts exhibitions, and athletic programs.

Attending both (or focusing on the one aligned with your attendance area or preference) helps families make informed decisions. Note that the district also offers processes for in-district transfers and open enrollment, which counselors can address if relevant.

What to Expect on April 13

•  6:30 p.m. – Short Welcome Program in the gymnasium: Expect remarks from principals, highlights of school achievements, and an overview of the evening.

•  Following the Program — Self-guided or structured tours, departmental showcases (e.g., science labs, art rooms, career tech areas), opportunities to speak with teachers and club representatives, and informational tables on enrollment, athletics, and student services.

•  Family-Friendly Atmosphere — Current high school students often serve as ambassadors, sharing authentic perspectives on life at their school.

Dress comfortably for walking, and encourage your 8th grader to come with questions — this is their future!
