DUBUQUE, Iowa – A Dubuque County Sheriff’s Deputy was stabbed in the shoulder while responding to a domestic disturbance call involving a home invasion on Friday, September 27, 2025. The incident occurred at a residence in the 10000 block of Boleyn Road, rural Dubuque, and culminated in the arrest of 35-year-old Corey M. Ary on multiple felony and misdemeanor charges.

According to authorities, the Dubuque County Sheriff’s Office and Dubuque Police Department were dispatched to the scene around 9:40 p.m. following reports of a domestic disturbance. Upon arrival, deputies learned that Ary had allegedly broken into the home, assaulted a female resident, and barricaded himself with her in a bedroom. As deputies attempted to access the room, Ary swung a switchblade knife through a partially opened door, striking a Deputy in the shoulder. The deputy was transported to MercyOne Dubuque Medical Center, where he was treated for a non-life-threatening injury and released.

Ary refused to negotiate with law enforcement, demanding to leave without arrest. After a standoff, deputies deployed a Taser to subdue him, taking him into custody without further incident. The female resident was interviewed and reported prior assaults by Ary, indicating a history of domestic violence.

Charges Filed

Corey M. Ary faces 15 charges in connection with the incident, as filed in Dubuque County District Court. These include:

•  First-degree burglary (felony): Entering an occupied structure with intent to commit assault.

•  First-degree harassment (felony): Threatening to commit a forcible felony.

•  Domestic assault with intent to inflict serious injury (felony): Causing bodily injury to a household member.

•  Domestic assault with strangulation (felony): Strangling or suffocating a household member.

•  Domestic assault causing injury (felony): Causing bodily injury to a household member.

•  Willful injury (felony): Causing serious injury to another person.

•  False imprisonment (felony): Confining another without legal authority.

•  Assault on persons in certain occupations with a dangerous weapon (felony): Assaulting a peace officer with a weapon (related to the deputy’s stabbing).

•  Possession of methamphetamine (felony): Unlawful possession of a controlled substance.

•  Possession of marijuana (simple misdemeanor): Unlawful possession of marijuana.

•  Driving while barred (aggravated misdemeanor): Operating a vehicle while license is barred.

•  Second-degree kidnapping (felony, two counts): Confining another with intent to inflict serious injury or terrorize.

•  Going armed with intent (felony, two counts): Carrying a weapon with intent to use against another.

•  Eluding (felony, warrant): Willfully failing to stop for law enforcement.

•  Driving while barred (aggravated misdemeanor, warrant): Operating a vehicle while barred (warrant).

Ary is currently held without bond at the Dubuque County Jail. Court records indicate a history of prior assaults against the victim, and the investigation remains ongoing, with potential for additional charges.

Court Proceedings

On September 28, 2025, a magistrate set Ary’s bond at $250,000 cash. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for October 8, 2025, at 10:50 a.m. in Dubuque County District Court (case number 3106). Ary remains in custody without bond at the Dubuque County Jail. Court records indicate a history of prior assaults against the victim, and the investigation remains ongoing, with potential for additional charges.
