East Dubuque, Illinois (July 16, 2025, 2:57 PM CDT) – Residents of East Dubuque, Illinois, remain under a boil order as the city awaits the results of two critical water tests scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday, July 22 and 23, 2025. The order was issued following a significant pressure drop in the city’s water system during a valve installation project, and officials are hopeful that clean test results will allow the boil order to be lifted by Wednesday.

The issue originated on Thursday, June 23, 2025, when crews began installing a relief valve on St. Mary’s Drive as part of East Dubuque’s new water tower project. The valve is essential for managing system pressures once the new tower is operational. On Friday, June 24, a malfunctioning valve was found to be preventing the complete isolation of water flow to the construction area. To proceed, additional valves were closed, successfully halting the flow but causing an unexpected pressure drop across most of the city’s water system.

According to city officials, low water pressure can potentially allow bacteria to enter the system, posing a health risk to residents. “As a municipal water system, we are legally and morally obligated to protect public health,” said a spokesperson for the East Dubuque water department. “Following Illinois EPA guidelines, we issued the boil order immediately to ensure the safety of our community.”

Water testing began on Monday, July 14, with results expected by Tuesday, July 15. If the first test is clear, a second test will be submitted on Tuesday, with results due on Wednesday, July 16. Should both tests confirm the absence of contaminants, the boil order will be lifted.

In reviewing the incident, city officials praised the response of their team. “Our crew did everything possible given the circumstances,” the spokesperson said. “The malfunctioning valve was an unexpected challenge, and our team acted quickly to address it, even though it led to the pressure issue.”

To prevent future incidents, East Dubuque plans to schedule such projects earlier in the week to allow more time for resolution before weekends, when lab availability is limited. The city also aims to improve communication between departments to ensure timely and accurate information reaches residents. Additionally, officials will work to provide clearer updates to the press to keep the public well-informed.

For now, residents are advised to boil water for at least one minute before using it for drinking, cooking, or brushing teeth. Bottled water is a safe alternative. “We know this is an inconvenience, and we thank our community for their patience,” the spokesperson added. “Ensuring safe drinking water is our top priority.”
