Dubuque, IA – July 1, 2025. A high-risk traffic stop on Hwy. 151 turned deadly early Tuesday morning, resulting in the injury of a Dubuque County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) deputy and the death of the suspect. The incident occurred at approximately 4:25 a.m. when law enforcement agencies from Dubuque County, Dubuque Police Department, Iowa State Division of Narcotics Enforcement, Monticello Police Department, and Jones County Sheriff’s Office converged on a vehicle as part of a multi-jurisdictional investigation.

During the traffic stop, the suspect, an adult male and sole occupant of the vehicle, produced a handgun and fired shots. A DCSO deputy was struck by gunfire and transported to MercyOne Emergency Department in Dubuque before being transferred to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. The deputy’s condition is reported as serious but stable.

The suspect was also struck by gunfire and pronounced deceased shortly after being transported from the scene. The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) has taken over the investigation, and all inquiries should be directed to DCI Assistant Director Don Schnitker at (515) 238-0465.

According to authorities, there is no ongoing danger to the public as a result of this incident. The deputies and officers involved have been placed on Critical Incident Leave in accordance with their respective agency policies. The investigation is ongoing, and further details will be released as more information becomes available.
