Iowa Launches High-Visibility Traffic Safety Campaign for Fourth of July Weekend

DES MOINES, Iowa – June 23, 2025 – As Iowans gear up for Fourth of July celebrations filled with fireworks, cookouts, and pool parties, the Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau (GTSB) is urging residents to prioritize safety on the roads. Following a tragic 2024 holiday weekend that saw nine traffic fatalities—the deadliest Fourth of July in over a decade—the GTSB is partnering with local law enforcement for a high-visibility enforcement campaign from July 3 to July 7, 2025.

The campaign aims to curb impaired driving and reduce traffic fatalities, which have become an alarming trend during the holiday. “We want people to enjoy the holiday and to celebrate responsibly,” said GTSB Bureau Chief Brett Tjepkes. “Impaired driving endangers everyone, and our law enforcement partners know how to spot an impaired driver and will not hesitate to pull them over. If you’re going to drink, plan for a sober ride ahead of time.”

To ensure safe travels, the GTSB encourages Iowans to designate a sober driver, schedule a taxi or rideshare, or utilize local sober ride programs. Adding to these efforts, Doll Distributing’s Decide to Ride program is offering a $10 Uber voucher to promote safe transportation choices. The voucher, valid statewide from 5:00 P.M. on July 3 to 2:00 A.M. on July 7, can be accessed at [insert link placeholder, as no specific link was provided]. The GTSB is supporting the initiative by raising awareness to help keep Iowa roads safe.

Authorities emphasize that planning ahead is key to preventing tragedies. Whether attending a barbecue or a fireworks display, Iowans are urged to make responsible choices and never drive impaired.

For more information on the Decide to Ride program or to access the Uber voucher, visit the GTSB website or contact local law enforcement. Let’s make this Fourth of July a safe and joyful celebration for all.
