Dubuque, Iowa — April 10, 2025
At approximately 1:10 p.m., Dubuque Police were notified of a general threat of violence targeting Hempstead High School. Responding immediately, officers collaborated with Dubuque Community School District staff to ensure heightened security measures were in place through dismissal time. The precaution included deploying additional officers to the school, prioritizing the safety of students and staff.
A preliminary investigation into the threat has indicated that it does not appear credible; however, Dubuque Police remain committed to thoroughly investigating the incident, treating all threats with the utmost seriousness.
According to the Dubuque Community School District, an external lockdown was initiated following a suspicious phone call received by the school. Students remained safe in class during the lockdown while police worked to identify the origin of the threat. After a comprehensive review of the situation, the lockdown was lifted at 2:20 p.m., allowing dismissal to proceed with an increased police presence on-site, out of an abundance of caution.
Lieutenant Luke Bock of the Dubuque Police Department expressed gratitude toward Hempstead students and staff for their cooperation and adherence to established safety protocols, stating, “The safety of our schools remains our top priority.”
The investigation remains ongoing. Authorities encourage anyone with information about this incident or similar threats to contact the Dubuque Police Department at 563-589-4415 or submit anonymous tips online at http://www.cityofdubuque.org/police.
