DUBUQUE, Iowa –
On March 3rd, 2025, at approximately 6:34 p.m., Austin Goodman, a 41-year-old resident of Dubuque, entered the Federal Building located at 350 W. 6th St. He proceeded to the second floor, where a Dubuque City Council meeting was in progress. Dubuque Police officers, who are typically present at all City Council meetings, were familiar with Goodman due to prior investigations and interactions. Furthermore, they were actively investigating a recent No Contact Order Violation committed by him. Consequently, they had probable cause to arrest him for violating the order.
Goodman had publicly announced his intention to attend the City Council meeting on social media platforms to notify the council and express his dissatisfaction with his interactions with the Police Department and other government agencies. He had also posted numerous other social media messages expressing his displeasure with the Dubuque Police and local government officials. Notably, he was live-streaming his entry into the Federal Building as he made his way towards the City Council meeting, which was being closely monitored by officers.
As Goodman approached the Council chambers, officers intercepted him, leading to his arrest. However, he resisted arrest and even assaulted one of the officers. Upon conducting a search of Goodman, officers discovered that he was in possession of a loaded semiautomatic handgun.
Goodman was charged with several offenses, including Interference with Official Acts While Armed with a Firearm, a Class D Felony; Assault on Persons in Certain Occupations, a serious misdemeanor; Possession of a Controlled Substance, a serious misdemeanor; Person Ineligible to Carry Dangerous Weapon, a serious misdemeanor; Interference with Official Acts, a simple misdemeanor; and Violation of No Contact Order, a contempt charge.
As in any criminal case, the charges filed are merely allegations, and any suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
