As parents, we expect our students to be safe at school and the fight at Hempstead High School showed that’s not the case.

During the fight that took place on Tuesday, there was a breach in security, with outsiders getting into the school during a fight and roaming the halls. This is unacceptable and more needs to be done to ensure that it doesn’t happen again. One positive was the quick action taken by Dubuque Police to lock down the school.

It’s time the school district revisited security at all the schools. What happened Tuesday showed the public what could potentially happen. It could have been a whole lot uglier.
