On November 15, 2022, at 11:37 AM, the Grant County Sheriff’s Office received a call about a one vehicle crash on Airport Rd near fire number 2490. The investigating deputy learned that Kevin Bourland, 50, of rural Platteville, WI was driving his 1999 Chevrolet 1500 pickup going west on Airport Rd, just east of the driveway to 2490 Airport Rd around 9:00 AM that morning. He said that he lost control of the vehicle on the snowy and wet road. Bourland said that the truck left the road to the right, and he was unable to correct this before it went down a steep embankment, striking trees and coming to rest on the driver’s side. Bourland was not injured in the crash.
During the investigation, the deputy had asked about insurance on the truck. Bourland stated the truck was insured but that his wife, Sarah Bourland (who was on scene at the time) had the insurance information. She showed the deputy the proof of insurance on her phone, but the truck was not listed as an insured vehicle. Sarah Bourland told the deputy that she had put the truck on a few days prior. She left the scene and returned about a half hour later or so and showed the deputy another proof of insurance; this time listing the truck, but the effective date was 12/29/22. The deputy called the insurance company and learned the truck had been added that day, about 18 minutes before the deputy calling the insurance company.
Kevin Bourland was cited for Failure to Maintain Control of a Motor Vehicle and Operate a Motor Vehicle Without Insurance. Sarah Bourland was cited for obstructing an Officer for providing false information about the insurance status of the truck.
The truck was removed from the scene by SOS Road Rescue of Platteville.
