Deonte Ellison, 27, received a sentence of 24 years for manslaughter in federal prison.

On July 2, 2020, he shot and killed Curtis Smothers on Loras Blvd. during a fight over a no contact order.

Ellison was originally charged with murder in the first degree of Curtis R. Smothers Jr. 25, and a
felon controlling a weapon / firearm/offensive weapon by a felon.

On Thursday, July 2nd, 2020 a Dubuque City video camera caught an altercation between a man and Smothers. During the altercation, the man pull a handgun from his waist and shoots Smothers in the chest.

A warrant was issued for Deonte Ellison, and he was found and arrested in Kalamazoo, Michigan on July 14th, by US Marshals and extradited to Dubuque to face charges.
