Parents along with teachers that are staffed at our local schools in Dubuque are concerned about their safety during school hours.
One teacher told us that she is against the school’s safety plan. When there is an active shooter, they have to shut the door and pull down the blinds over the window and the students have to get on the floor under their desk. She made the statement that she was not a duck and she was not gonna sit there and wait to be shot.
Even though the Dubuque Police Department been practicing. If that situation ever occurs, are they gonna sit outside the building and wait for their tactical team or are they going to go in and not make the same mistakes as other police departments have made that cost children their lives.
Teachers also informed us that the resource officers do not stay in the schools all day they go between them spending half of the day in one and the other half and the other one.
So the main question are the children safe in school? Not any safer than you at your workplace in a building. Yes they lock the doors but it has been proven already that they will buzz anyone in long as you say you’re to see a teacher.
Is it time for the school district to step up to protect the children in the community and put in the metal detectors and armed security before a disaster happens? You are the parents and the taxpayers. You have a voice. It’s time to step up.
If the school board does not want to protect the children, it’s time to vote them out. Something needs to be done before something happens to one of our schools in Dubuque.
Parents should be involved in the security of the schools.
Feel free to share your input and safety concerns.
