DUBUQUE, Iowa — Dubuque residents will gain an extra hour of sleep this weekend as daylight saving time comes to an end.

At 2:00 a.m. on Sunday, November 1, 2026, clocks move back one hour to 1:00 a.m., and the region returns to standard time. The simplest move is to set clocks back one hour before going to bed on Saturday night, October 31, 2026.

Phones, computers, and most connected devices update on their own. Manual clocks — wall clocks, microwaves, ovens, car dashboards, and older alarm clocks — will need to be changed by hand on Sunday morning.

The trade-off arrives with the earlier evenings: sunsets will come an hour earlier on the clock, and morning daylight returns. The change lands on a busy Sunday in Dubuque, with the Fighting Saints hosting Waterloo at 5:05 p.m. at ImOn Arena — a trip home that will now come after dark.

The clock change is also the traditional reminder to check smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detector batteries.

The schedule itself is not changing this year. The U.S. House of Representatives voted in July 2026 to make daylight saving time permanent, but that bill, the Sunshine Protection Act, is still awaiting action in the Senate, and no Senate vote can happen before November 1. Under current federal law, daylight saving time runs from the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November, a schedule in place since 2007.

Daylight saving time returns on Sunday, March 14, 2027, when clocks spring forward one hour
