DUBUQUE, Iowa — The Dubuque Police Department is urging residents to remain vigilant after continuing to receive reports of community members falling victim to scams involving wire transfers, gift cards, cryptocurrency, and in-person cash handovers.

Scammers frequently target older adults and other vulnerable individuals by creating a sense of urgency and fear. Common tactics include claiming a loved one is in jail, threatening arrest, saying a bank account has been compromised, or demanding immediate payment to avoid serious consequences.

Police emphasize that legitimate businesses, government agencies, and law enforcement will never demand payment through gift cards (such as Apple or Google Play), wire transfers, cryptocurrency, or cash deliveries.

Officials recommend that anyone contacted take time to slow down and verify the information. Residents should contact a trusted family member, friend, caregiver, or law enforcement before taking any action. If something does not seem right, it probably is not, police said.

The department is asking businesses, community organizations, caregivers, and family members to discuss these scams with those who may be most at risk. A simple conversation could prevent someone from losing thousands of dollars.

Anyone who believes they are being targeted should not send money. Instead, they should contact the Dubuque Police Department’s non-emergency line to report the incident and seek guidance.

“When in doubt, hang up, stop communicating, and contact someone you trust,” the department advised. “Scammers rely on fear and urgency. Don’t let them pressure you into acting before verifying the facts.”

Residents with questions or concerns are encouraged to call the Dubuque Police non-emergency number.
