DUBUQUE, Iowa – A 52-year-old Dubuque man was taken into custody late Saturday night after allegedly leading law enforcement on a pursuit that ended in a residential area. The suspect now faces a series of drug and traffic-related charges.
Daniel John Bartels, of 2950 Eagle Point Park Drive, was arrested at 11:31 p.m. on June 13, 2026, in the 300 block of Olympic Heights Road, according to booking records. He is charged with:
· Drug Possession of a Controlled Substance (Misdemeanor), in violation of Iowa Code § 124.401(5).
· Possession of Drug Paraphernalia (Simple Misdemeanor).
· Eluding (Serious Misdemeanor), under Iowa Code § 321.279(1).
· Failure to Prove Security Against Liability (Misdemeanor).
· Insufficient Number of Headlamps.
· Driving Under Suspension.
Pursuit and Arrest
According to the Dubuque County Sheriff’s Department, a deputy initially attempted to stop Bartels’ vehicle on Central Avenue after observing a non‑functioning headlight. Instead of pulling over, Bartels continued driving, failing to stop until he reached a residence in the 300 block of Olympic Heights Road.
A subsequent search of Bartels and his vehicle allegedly uncovered methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia. Court documents also indicate that Bartels was cited for driving under suspension, operating without proof of insurance, and the original headlight violation.
Bond Information
Under Iowa’s Uniform Bond Schedule, which applies when courts are not in session, bond amounts for the charges would be:
· Serious Misdemeanor (Eluding) – $1,000.
· Simple Misdemeanor (Drug Paraphernalia) – $300.
· Traffic offenses – Amounts set by the State of Iowa Compendium of Scheduled Violations.
However, because the arrest involves manufacture, delivery, possession with intent to manufacture or deliver, or distribution of methamphetamine under Iowa Code § 124.401, a judicial officer must first review the case before any bond can be set. Bartels was released on $1000 cash bond.
All persons arrested are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
