Dubuque, Iowa — Firefighters responded swiftly to a commercial structure fire at the Oky Doky convenience store early Wednesday morning, extinguishing a small blaze before it could cause major damage to the popular local business.

The Dubuque Fire Department was dispatched at approximately 6:14 a.m. on May 13, 2026, to the report of a commercial structure fire at 535 Hill St. Crews arrived on scene just 2 minutes and 39 seconds later and found no visible smoke or flames from the exterior of the building. 

Upon entering the structure to investigate, firefighters located a small fire involving materials within an interior wall area near refrigeration equipment. Crews quickly brought the fire under control, secured the affected electrical components, and conducted ventilation operations to clear light smoke from the building.

The fire was confined to the area of origin with no significant extension to other parts of the structure. No injuries were reported to civilians or firefighters.

Cause and Damage

Fire officials determined the blaze was caused by minor electrical arcing that ignited nearby combustible materials. Division Chief Dave Grass emphasized the importance of proper electrical safety in a statement following the incident.

“The Dubuque Fire Department reminds the public that any unused or modified electrical wiring must be properly terminated and inspected by a qualified electrician to help prevent accidental fires,” Chief Grass said.

Estimated property damage from the fire is approximately $4,100, with an additional $5,100 in contents loss. The building has an estimated value of around $2 million.

Oky Doky (also styled OKY DOKY) is a longstanding local chain of convenience stores in the Dubuque area, known for offering groceries, beverages, lottery tickets, and other essentials. The Hill Street location has been part of the community for years and serves as a neighborhood staple.
