The Dubuque Police Protective Association (DPPA) has officially launched its annual fundraising campaign for the 14th “Shop With A Cop” event, aiming to support local children with back-to-school essentials once again in 2026.

In a press release issued in February 2026, the DPPA — the bargaining unit representing Dubuque police officers — announced that Key Services solicitors will seek donations from February through the end of September 2026. The initiative builds on the success of previous years, where community generosity enabled meaningful impact. Last year, the program raised over $25,000, allowing the DPPA to assist nearly 100 Dubuque children in purchasing clothing and school supplies.

“Shop With A Cop” is a longstanding community outreach program that pairs police officers with underprivileged or deserving youth, providing them with a positive shopping experience and necessary items for the school year. While the event itself typically occurs in the fall (often around September, based on prior years), the extended fundraising period gives businesses, organizations, and individuals ample time to contribute. The program fosters goodwill between law enforcement and the community, emphasizing positive interactions and support for families in need.

The DPPA expressed deep appreciation for the ongoing support from Dubuque citizens, local businesses, and organizations that have made past events possible. They specifically thanked Target for their continued partnership, which has helped facilitate the shopping outings in previous years (commonly held at the Target location on Dodge Street).

Donation options include:

•  Cash contributions, which are accepted and appreciated.

•  Checks made payable to the Dubuque Police Protective Association (preferred for larger or formal gifts).

Solicitors from Key Services will approach potential donors directly, providing details and collection methods. Alternatively, donations can be dropped off at the Dubuque Law Enforcement Center, located at 770 Iowa Street in Dubuque.

For any questions about the event, fundraising, or participation, individuals are encouraged to contact DPPA Board Member Nick Schlosser. He can be reached via email at nschloss@cityofdubuque.org (note: the release lists a slight variation as nschloss@cityofdubuque.org, but the standard city format is nschloss@cityofdubuque.org) or by phone at (563) 587-3813.

This year’s campaign arrives amid consistent community enthusiasm for the program, which has grown over more than a decade. Past iterations have raised amounts ranging from approximately $25,000 to $40,000 in different years, directly benefiting dozens to over 100 children annually. By providing essential back-to-school items, the effort helps alleviate financial burdens on families while building trust and positive relationships between police officers and young residents.

The DPPA encourages early and generous contributions to ensure the 14th annual “Shop With A Cop” can reach as many children as possible in the Dubuque area. Community involvement remains key to sustaining this impactful tradition.
