DUBUQUE, Iowa — February 2, 2026 — A residence at 1265 Thomas Place suffered two structure fires Monday, resulting in approximately $228,000 in combined damage and rendering the home uninhabitable.

The Dubuque Fire Department first responded at 9:47 a.m. after reports of a structure fire. Engine 6 arrived within four minutes and found no exterior signs of fire, but crews discovered fire, smoke, and heat on the first floor. An initial exterior attack transitioned to interior operations; knockdown occurred within five minutes of arrival. Fire was confined to the room of origin. All residents had evacuated safely before crews arrived. Units cleared after overhaul.

At approximately 1:00 p.m., the department was dispatched back to the same address for a second fire with visible attic flames. Engine 6 established command and initiated a defensive attack. Additional handlines and a master stream were deployed. Once conditions permitted, interior crews entered to extinguish remaining fire on the second floor and attic. Hot spots were addressed over the next hour. The fire was declared out at 2:50 p.m., with personnel remaining on scene until 6:00 p.m.

Total estimated losses: $179,000 to the structure and $49,000 to contents. No residents or pets were injured. One firefighter sustained a minor injury but remained on duty. The cause of both fires remains under investigation by the Assistant Fire Marshal.
