HAZEL GREEN, Wis. – A Platteville man was arrested for operating while intoxicated following a single-vehicle crash in the Town of Hazel Green on Thursday, January 23, 2026.

According to the Grant County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched to the intersection of County Highways H and Z just after 10:30 p.m. for a report of a vehicle in the ditch.

The investigation revealed that Grant Herbst, 21, was traveling south on CTY H when his vehicle left the roadway. The vehicle entered the ditch, continued through a private yard, crossed CTY Z, and finally came to rest in a cornfield.

Herbst reported no injuries from the incident, but his vehicle sustained disabling damage and required removal by Guy’s Towing Service of Kieler.

Following the crash, Herbst was arrested for Operating While Under the Influence (OWI) – 1st Offense. He was also cited for Failure to Maintain Control of a Vehicle and for not wearing a seatbelt.

The Grant County Sheriff’s Office notes that persons arrested are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. An arrest indicates only that probable cause exists to bring formal charges.

The incident was recorded under case number CFS26-01860.
